Shtizu’s love to travel and a well brought-up shitzu makes a magnificent representative for the breed. Whether you are on a long trip, or a short excursion, the company and camaraderie of your shitzu can make the trip all the more fun.
Here are a few things you can do to make you and your shitzu’s travel a lot more comfortable and less stressful:
1). Make sure your shitzu is trained to his or her travel kennel and feels comfortable and secure inside of it. This training begins early in life, by using the travel crate daily as a security den and placing food tidbits inside of it every so often. When it comes time to take a trip, your shitzu will feel at home in his or her travel kennel and will not be anxious or fuss.
2). Get hold of a health certificate for travel. Make sure your shitzu is in excellent health and able to make the trip. It would also be wise to ask your veterinarian to do a physical examination and verify that all necessary vaccinations are up to date. You should also ask about any recommended medications you might need for the trip.
3). Make sure you have all the things you will need during the trip, including items in case of illness or emergency. Here is a list of things you should make sure you have before your trip:
– Travel kennel
– Collar with identification tag and leash
– Dishes, food, and bottled water
– First aid kit
– Toys and bedding
– Grooming supplies
– Pooper scooper, plastic bags, and paper towels
– Veterinary records, photo identification, microchip number, and contact phone numbers
4). Make reservations ahead of time. Make sure you check with hotels or campgrounds to be sure pets are allowed. You should also Reserve space for a dog with the airlines if air travel is part of your travel plans.
Trips can be fun, but all too often things can go wrong. That is why it is very important to make sure you take every precaution to keep you and your shitzu safe. Your dog will love for your vigilance.
